Inventing Drawing and Painting Materials
© 2000 Nita Leland

If you'd like to begin drawing and painting but you feel intimidated by the variety of art materials available (not to mention the cost!), look around your home and see what you can find. Check the kitchen, the vanity and the garage and see what you can find. Anything that makes a mark and any surface that can accept one is fair game. This project isn't about making art; it's about using materials creatively.

This illustration shows what you can do on ordinary copy paper using a felt or ball point pen, lip liner, eye shadow, food coloring, wax crayons and wood stains. See what else you can find. Needless to say, these tools won't make archival art, but if they help you to overcome your uncertainty and take the first step toward getting into art, do it! You'll be glad you did.
